Sounds solid.

But averages hide distribution.

Auto and manufacturing may touch 9.5 percent.
Tech averages near 9.3 percent.
IT services hover closer to 6.8 to 7 percent.

Now layer inflation.

The Reserve Bank of India projects CPI for FY26 around 2.1 percent.

This year is not about survival.

It is about separation.

The average employee collects 9 percent.

High impact talent often moves into double digits. Mercer data repeatedly shows mid level performers clustering around 7 to 8 percent, while top contributors outperform.

So the real question is simple.

Where do you sit inside that spread?

Salary Is Not the Real Metric

Hikes follow leverage.

Leverage comes from skills the market is actively rewarding.

McKinsey estimates that AI and automation will reshape millions of roles in India over the coming decade. By 2030, AI adoption alone could create up to 950,000 new industrial jobs. It will also transform many more across analytics, product, and operations.

Patience does not create leverage.

Relevance does.

If your skills remain static, time slowly erodes your edge.

If your capabilities expand into high demand zones, time multiplies your value.

That is strategic patience.

Anything else is drift.

The Sunk Cost Trap

There is a psychological layer most professionals ignore.

Sunk cost bias.

In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman explains human behavior. People irrationally stick to decisions simply because they have already invested time or effort.

In India, culture amplifies this.

Stable job equals respect.
Government role equals security.
Switching equals risk.

So people stay.

Three years become five.
Five become eight.

Not because growth is accelerating.

Because leaving feels like loss.

The quiet danger is this.

The longer you stay without increasing leverage, the weaker your negotiation position becomes.

Optionality shrinks.

How Growth Actually Accelerates

In corporates, startups, family businesses, or government roles, promotions rarely follow tenure alone.

They follow visible impact.

Acceleration happens when:

You quantify contribution in business terms.
Decision makers know your work without introduction.
Responsibility expands before your designation does.

Activity keeps you employed.

Impact makes you promotable.

In a 9 percent market, that difference determines whether you land at 7 percent or 15 percent.

Early in my career in Delhi, I believed consistency would be enough.

I worked 50 plus hours per week for nearly two years at a mid sized IT firm.

My compensation barely moved.

I watched a colleague get promoted while I stayed flat.

Increase visibility strategically.
Test the market periodically.

Strategic patience means compounding leverage while you stay.

Passive patience means hoping someone notices.

In 2026, with 9 percent as the baseline and AI reshaping demand, the gap between those two paths will widen.

Markets reward value creation, not loyalty duration.

Before you accept the advice to just be patient, ask one hard question.

Is something compounding in the background?

If yes, build it.

If not, change something.
